Nosferatu
I have always been a film of silent. I think when sound came into the picture we began to lose subtext, the main form of communication between humans. When sound came around, text was used as a way to communicate almost everything. The old saying goes, a pictures worth a thousand words. Art deals in the realm of the subject, so when we use text words to give it a defined meaning, than in a way, it loses meaning when we define it. A good story gives us all of the given circumstance but doesn’t always give us the logic and reason and explanation behind what happens in the given moment. Is a film where very little is explained. Hayao Miyazaki is another story teller who rarely explains what is going on. What he cares about is the relationship between characters. And that doesn't need to be conveyed through text. That is the job the actor and cinematographer, lighting and set design. The where many moments where I was wondering what was going on, but I also was able to put two and two together, coming up with ideas of what is going on. The human brain comes up its own ideas because humans must always have some sort of explanation. The same reason why magicians can captivate an audience.
Fear and excitement are very closely linked. This is why we have adrenaline rush when we are on a roller coaster. This is the same for a horror film. The horror of seeing someone blunged to death and at the same time the excitement, the body wanting to participate. First person shooter games tap right into this human psychology, the desire of the hunt. So why is there a fascination with horror. I believe there are two types of fear. There is internal fear and then physical fear. Internal fear is one which we all have. Here is an example. Driving along the road one day I saw a big propane truck coming towards me. I felt something in my body. I wanted to pull my car into the other lane and see what would happen. The explosion would be awesome. I often get this impulse when driving over bridges. Of course I haven't done this, sense I am still alive. Some of the impulse I get scare me. My mind scares me alot. Then there is physical fear. This is the bodies way of staying alive. The fear that it is a tiger that made that made that snapping sound. Nightmares are normally constituted of what we fear the most. It is believed that nightmares are the brain's way of training for the given circumstances. Most horror films tap into the physical, setting the viewer into fight, flight or freeze mood. Once in a while it will tap into the internal fears. Silence of the lambs is not a horror film is not a horror film but Hannibal Lecter goes deep within the subconsciousness. Inciting great fear of ourselves, what we are capable of. There are very few people who are truly evil. It is the unknown that scares us, and in all truth, death.
